It was something Surrey landlords didn’t want to see.
Private residential landlords in Surrey have taken a risk and invested in rental properties in our city.
We pay our taxes and spend thousands of dollars hiring plumbers, electricians and other contractors to make our income property safe and secure.
We create high quality affordable housing across the region as government social housing can’t keep up and rarely, if ever, matches the quality of unit we rent out.
It was something we didn’t want to see. However, it was something we needed to see.
It was a wake-up call for all Surrey landlords and landlords across British Columbia.
It was a post a tenant put up. It wasn’t an ad, it was more like an announcement.
What Did The Crazy Craigslist Post Say?
The Craiglist post started off with the headline:
“GREEDY LANDLORDS OF SURREY”
The headline continued with “Surrey slum city landlords.”
The message was so ridiculous it would be funny if it didn’t show such a lack of appreciation of the risks and investment we’ve made to create high quality affordable housing.
The body of the post started with:
“I don’t know why you greedy surrey landlords keep raising the rent, for you so called illegal made up suites. For the price your (sic) asking I’d rather move to a better city…”
Raising the Rent?
I guess this person doesn’t know that landlords in British Columbia can only increase the rent by the government approved guideline each year.
What Else Did The Craigslist Post Say?
It continued saying this person would rather rent in a city like “Vancouver or Burnaby fir (sic) the same exact amount your (sic) asking for greedy slum landlords.”
How Can I Rent To Good Tenants and Avoid These Type of Bad Tenants?
These types of tenants are out there. Anger, jealousy…and lots of spelling mistakes.
We used to think these type of crazy tenants were only something Ontario landlords faced.
Things are changing fast.
To avoid these types you need to do proper tenant screening.
Tenant Credit Check
A tenant credit check will provide you with the financial history of the person who wants to rent from you.
Do they have a history of paying their bills on time and taking their financial responsibilities seriously?
Or do they ‘rage on’ against paying bills and throw insults at those who provide services and products to them?
